ABERDEEN — The Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District is seeking a new superintendent of schools to succeed Bruce Quinn, 57, who will retire Jan. 1.

At a special meeting Thursday night, the Board of Education met with representatives of the state School Boards Association and the Association of School Administrators to see what type of services the two organizations offer in searching for a new superintendent.

Quinn handed in his resignation about two weeks ago, board president Lawrence O'Connell said. The resignation is effective Jan. 1, but his last day on the job will be Nov. 6.

The two associations discussed with the board the costs and elaborate process of finding Quinn's successor for this district of seven schools.

O'Connell said the next step is for the board to meet and evaluate both firms and decide which one will suit the district's needs.

The entire process of finding a replacement will take months, O'Connell said.

Quinn, whose salary is about $150,000 annually, has served as superintendent since August 2002. He began working in the district in various positions since September 1979. He served as business administrator/board secretary for 8 years.

For the 2007-08 school year, Quinn was instrumental in introducing Response to Intervention, or RTI, a program designed to help students with academic or behavioral difficulties.

Full implementation of the first-time program will take place this fall for the first through sixth grades. Partial implementation of the program and some services will be carried out in grades seven through 11.

Based upon developmental issues and availability of resources, kindergartners will be considered for the program in the second part of the school year.

Quinn, who was not present Thursday, said in an interview, "I still love this district, the staff, our students and the community."
